CliniSys and Mawell create partnership to improve workflow and patient safety within digital pathology

05 March 2015

Thanks to a new partnership between CliniSys and Mawell, pathology laboratories across the UK are set to have a LIMS integrated image management solution that will lead to improved levels of patient safety and will be supportive of data governance requirements with patient centric images.

CliniSys recognises the growing requirements for digital pathology and the need to resolve the common issues in accessing and managing images that are experienced in pathology. Currently, pathology images are typically stored outside of the LIMS, which creates a disconnect between the pathology event and the image. Images are often stored in various formats, including some proprietary to the device, they are viewed either locally or not at all, and are not linked in context to the patient in the LIMS. Due to a lack of a central storage solution, images are rarely being stored or saved, and are not integrated or shared outside of the pathology department.

Mawell’s Picsara imaging solution will be integrated in CliniSys’ systems to create a centralised, secure and robust storage and retrieval facility for all pathology images. The use of Picsara will allow CliniSys customers to ensure the complete integrity of the relationship between the image and the patient demographic data. Having the image fully integrated with the CliniSys LIMS, and with all necessary patient  demographics routinely recorded with the image itself, ensures improved levels of patient safety and is fully supportive of data governance requirements with patient centric images.

This new partnership offers customers the breadth of experience of CliniSys in pathology laboratory IT, alongside comprehensive multi-media management provided by Mawell, a specialist with over 14 years expertise in image management for healthcare settings across Scandinavia and Europe.

Picsara is a powerful multi-media management solution that addresses the increased demand to share, review, save, annotate and link images with the wider hospital infrastructure in line with the principles of interoperable IT connectivity. With Picsara it will be possible to design imaging workflows tightly linked to the CliniSys LIMS workflow and make these images available to all clinicians with an interest in the diagnosis or treatment of the patient, including Multi-Disciplinary Teams.

CliniSys is Europe’s largest dedicated pathology solutions provider with a suite of laboratory solutions covering all pathology disciplines and supporting the latest best practice workflows essential for the drive for greater efficiency highlighted in Lord Carter’s report.

Rain Eriksoo, Business Unit Director for E-Health Systems at Mawell, said: “This is an exciting partnership for us at Mawell. Picsara is a well established and high quality clinical imaging software that is extensively used throughout Europe and the Nordics. This partnership with an extremely well regarded LIMS provider, in CliniSys is in keeping with our quality, safety and efficiency arguments and our ambitions to expand Picsara further into to the UK clinical market. This agreement will enable us and CliniSys and Mawell to ensure that all clinical images handled by a pathology department are securely held, easily retrieved and always in strong patient context. We at Mawell look forward to working closely with CliniSys into the future."

Simon Hurst, Commercial Director for CliniSys said “As part of our commitment to partnership with our customers, we continue to work with our significant installed base to better understand how our solutions meet their needs. The ongoing focus on improving operational efficiency and improving the quality and capability of pathology services highlighted the area of image management where innovative technologies can deliver real benefits today. Our partnership with Mawell and the use of Picsara’s single imaging platform linked to CliniSys’ Laboratory Information Systems will enable us to immediately address our customers’ key objectives in reducing risks in misinterpretation and increasing efficiencies."
